Even in the seemingly peaceful, quiet Southern bubble of the Triangle (Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham) are of North Carolina, it is possible to fall into despair and/or get very stressed considering the events happening in the world these days. War, elections, drought, violence, crime, all of it can get everyone down and forgetful of the beauty there is in that very same world. There is a place, not too far out in the country, but just enough, where Triangle residents and visitors can go to find this beauty and, if for just a weekend, experience and draw from it. This place is called Shakori Hills, and every Spring and Fall, the GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance is held there. There is grass and clean air as far as the eye can see, and the ground swells with everything that makes people happy: handmade crafts, tasty food, children’s activities, dancing, world and local culture, and best of all music! There are four stages, two large outdoor, a dance tent and an intimate cabaret stage. Each festival boasts around 40 bands. There is definitely something for everyone. At any one time, a person can learn how to clog, listen to a story, get a massage, boogie to a Zydeco accordian, blow bubbles with a child, learn how to environmentally equip a home, and chow down on a freshly baked slice of homemade pizza. All this to say that just the word “festival” cannot quite describe it. The only way to fully understand is to escpae the every day world, get outside, and come to the GrassRoots Festival at Shakori Hills October 9-12!

Glee Kids October 7, 2008
Mmmm… this is my good friend Melissa’s beautiful, wonderful, fabulous store. Gorgeous clothes, toys, gifts and fun stuff for stylish kids and moms. I got the boys these fantastic arm warmers – babylegs – last time I was there. Melissa travels far and wide to pick out the coolest stuff. Forget miniBoden. Glee is where it’s at.

Kidzu October 7, 2008
Kidzu Children’s Museum is a hands-on museum in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill where children 0-8 years old and the adults in their lives can safely discover, pretend, and play to their heart’s content. Currently exhibiting KidZoom, and interactive display of NC-related kid-friendly activities, like a Farmer’s Market, art center and book corner. We’re big fans of Kidzu, mostly because it’s the only local kid museum, even though the community-related stuff is essentially lost on my kids. The folks behind it are trying very hard, hoping to expand and staying involved in the community. Go check it out
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5 pm, Sunday 1-5 pm
Please Note: Weekday Mornings (10-11:30) and Saturdays tend to be the busiest times at Kidzu. Admission: $4/person for adults and for children over 24 months of age. Members and children 24 months and under are admitted free.
*Beginning 9/21/08, Sundays are FREE through the generous support of Durham Regional Hospital. Learn more…
Group Visits: $3 person for preregistered group with 8 or more children that visit during our 9-10am field trip time. Click on “Group Visits” category on left for more information.
Parking: Parking is available directly behind the museum in Town Lot #2 (100 E. Rosemary Street), in the Rosemary Street Parking Deck (150 E. Rosemary) and in the Wallace Parking Deck (on the north side of East Rosemary Street just west of Henderson Street). Metered parking is also available on Franklin Street.
Parking in downtown Chapel Hill is now FREE on Sundays! This includes on-street parking as well as all town-owned lots, including Lot 2 just behind Kidzu.
Meet a Scientist October 6, 2008
How cool is this? Trust Morehead to come up with an honest-to-goodness cool program for our pint-sized neuroscientists.
Dr. Aysenil Belger
cognitive neuroscientist
Saturday, Oct. 18
12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Look into the brain to read the mind! Have you ever thought about how you think?
Meet cognitive neuroscientist Aysenil Belger and join her on an exploration of the inner workings of the human brain.
Play at color association and experiment with spatial memory to discover how your brain is organized. How do neuroscientists study the brain?
Come with questions and walk away with a better understanding of your own cranial capacity. After the program, enjoy a slice of brain-shaped “jello!”
